The Art of Indian Craftsmanship: When Macramé Transforms Lives

At MIIZA, we strive to promote unique handcrafted creations while highlighting the social impact that this craftsmanship can have on local communities. One of our most inspiring collaborations comes from India, where we work with talented artisans, particularly women who are transforming their lives through the art of macramé.

A Mission of Women's Empowerment

In India, 80% of women work in the informal sector, often without contracts or fixed wages, making them vulnerable to injustices. In this context, our partnership aims to provide stable employment opportunities for these women, offering permanent contracts and fixed salaries, allowing them to achieve true financial independence. Today, seven women benefit from this permanent employment program. Beyond the financial aspect, we also contribute to their social education through specially designed courses to raise awareness about their rights and responsibilities within society.

An Inspiring Journey

It all began at the end of 2020 in the village of Banswara, where women, often married very young, find themselves under their husbands' control and working in precarious jobs without social protection. Prity Mehta, a macramé expert, recognized the potential of this craft and started training the women in the village.

Soon, these women began creating dreamcatchers and other macramé items, which allowed them to gain independence. One of them, a victim of domestic violence, was even able to secure independent housing thanks to her new income, bringing an end to a difficult situation.

This social impact is at the heart of our approach: providing concrete means of empowerment through craftsmanship.

Courses to Raise Awareness

In addition to the technical aspect, we are involved in organizing courses on essential social topics. Women learn not only to recognize their rights but also to understand their responsibilities within society. In a context where 50% of rural women in India are illiterate, these courses become a cornerstone for their independence.

We also offer learning modules in geography, history, current events, and accounting to enhance their overall understanding and empower them to take on greater responsibilities. These sessions play a key role in fostering cohesion and the supportive atmosphere among the artisans.

A Lasting Impact

Through this model, these women have the opportunity to achieve true independence, both financially and personally. Each macramé creation embodies an ancient artisan tradition and represents a chance for profound change in the lives of those who craft them.

By purchasing these creations, you are not only contributing to the preservation of a unique craftsmanship but also supporting a social mission aimed at sustainably improving the lives of women in rural areas.
